Is 4chan's problems due to the rate of activity, a lack of refreshment/reincarnation (tribalism emerging from concentrations of people gathering in one spot for too long), culture clash/too many different types of people or a combination of the above?

Summer has ended. That could explain the drop.
Too many people/newfags to self moderate. Management is too bad to actually moderate.

What "problems" are you talking about?

It's not enjoyable to post here. I think most simply want to vent after work or school. I have no need but I do want some kind of meaningful human interaction. Not smart enough or have connections to know where else to go.
It must be Generation Snowflake can't stand other people having different tastes, preferences, or attitudes from themselves.
I go through the catalog of any given board and see maybe five threads that show any promise, and that's fine, leave the other 95 or 145 or whatever alone. They're not bothering me, no matter how shit their subject matter or post style is.
Different boards are different, there's no "4chan" these days.

The differences are superficial. ...as far as I can tell sans boards that have no rhetoric and are soley image dumps.

Too many people of all kinds, but the main problem is too many underage. I think even /b/ would be a better board if there weren't so many kids.
