I just saw 2 shitposting threads getting “archived by force". Replies don't bump the thread and it eventually gets archived.
Is this a thing now? Why not just delete the whole discussion?

I believe that's what's called autosaging.
Usually, it only happens when a thread reaches its bump limit, which is usually around 300 or 500 posts.
However, sometimes a mod might place it on autosage before it reaches that limit.
They say it's a good way to get rid of a thread that doesn't need to get deleted but still needs to GTFO. A good example are metathreads, since the mods don't want its userbase to think they're silencing any and all criticism of them by deleting them.
I have seen a few examples of threads that are a better fit of what you say is "archived by force," and those are threads that get moved by mods to other boards such as /trash/. When this happens, the mod ends the thread saying the thread has been moved to [new thread location] and the thread is archived immediately.
