I'd say the biggest mistake was the complete lack of awareness in regards to what the average user desired in a new board. People wanted a good /b/, and while you can debate whether or not /bant/ succeeded at that, you can't deny that /pol/ users were happy with /pol/ and that's where they remained.
While I don't like the board much myself, it made me smile to see rapeape fail so miserably and the users to decide the direction of their new board. Good for you, /bant/.
