What is the difference between bookfags who primarily read fiction and animefags? Both are deeply submerged in escapism, only they consume another form of media. What is the difference between blabbing on about the redeeming qualities of Achilles' character in The Iliad and the timidity of Sagiri in Eromanga Sensei? One hobby is regarded as an intellectual pursuit that is worthy of devoting countless hours to and the other is considered a simple distraction for degenerates. Is it because narratives from older and contemporary literary classics are generally better than those found in anime? Is it because televised media already has a negative reputation, however false, as something that's designed for audiences with short attention spans? What could it be, /qa/?
>>
I was vaguely interested in what you had to say up until you mentioned eromanga sensei.
kill yourself
>>
>>1515833
Well, what type of example was I supposed to use for anime?
>>
Seeing as you used "degenerate" and then proceeded to compare the Iliad to Eromanga I will reasonable assume that you either have not read many books nor consumed much anime media or you do not wish to have a genuine discussion of the topic. Which ever it is you need to spend some time away from imageboards.
>>
>>1515857
>Seeing as you used "degenerate"
I myself did not claim it was degenerate, but that this was a perception held by the public. Anime is full of simple plot lines and fanservice, so naturally, it lends itself to that impression. I was not comparing The Illiad to ES either, only the act of discussing fictional books to anime. Those were just examples of both. It feels like you're going out of your way to look for some hidden agenda behind this post. An actual contribution to the discussion would have been nice.
>>
>>1515886
Then you are someone who wishes to learn more about the world. No more, no less.
>>
>>1515884
Degenerate is not a mainstream term in America outside of neo-nazi groups and more recently the alt-right. People will recognize it and know what you mean but more appropriate words would be losers, nerds, weeaboos, geeks, loners, weirdos, etc. Degenerate is not an often used term in casual American conversation. I can only imagine that you used that word because you know no other similar word or you wished to use the term as a sort of dog wistle.
You did explicitly compare the Iliad to Eromanga. Specifically you compared "blabbing on about the redeeming qualities of Achilles' character in The Iliad and the timidity of Sagiri in Eromanga Sensei". You compared the act of discussing chracteristics of Achilles to a characteristic Sagiri possess. The example you gave was a comparison between two works, with the intention of highlighting the stark contrast between classical European literature and modern Japanese animation. The only topic worth disscussing ITT is why and how you draw comparisons to these different forms of media.
>>
>>1515920
>Degenerate is not a mainstream term in America outside of neo-nazi groups
If you yourself had read more books or ventured outside, you would understand that a common dictionary phrase like "degenerate" is used frequently to describe activities that would be considered a waste of time. It is not primarily a word popularized and used by a community on a image board. Listen to yourself, man.

>You did explicitly compare the Iliad to Eromanga. Specifically you compared "blabbing on about the redeeming qualities of Achilles' character in The Iliad and the timidity of Sagiri in Eromanga Sensei"
"blabbing" being the operative word. How do you not get this? There was no direct comparison between the two and doing so would be comparing apples to oranges. They're completely different in medium and narrative. Again, you're reaching for conclusions.
>>
>>1515957
I made no mention or implication of an image board popularizing the term, mr "jump to conclusions" and just anecdotally in my American family of 50+ the only people who use the term degenerate are my cousin and I.
You feigned innocence does not escape anyone.
So if not the works you are comparing then you are comparing the people that consume the works. If this is the case then you are merely wanting to highlight the societally degradation that is occurring, as you would like to frame it. The most troubling thing about this all is your desire to bring politics onto this board. All the trappings are there; reverence of European history, contempt for modern media, and the elephant in the room pepe. While you may or may not believe your words, one thing is certain and that is you only wish to talk about things with a politically biased framework.

>I made no mention or implication of an image board popularizing the term
That what evidence have you to suggest that degeneracy is not a mainstream term in America outside of neo-nazi and alt right groups?

>Feigned innocence
Thank you for announcing that you indeed came here to find some ulterior motive behind the opening post.

>So if not the works you are comparing then you are comparing the people that consume the works.
A comparison between the people who consume these forms of media is necessary to get to the bottom of why they are perceived so differently by society despite ultimately embracing works of fiction just the same.

>The most troubling thing about this all is your desire to bring politics onto this board.
This is a questions and answers board is it not? Or, at the very least, is a board without a topic. I fail to see what is so wrong about this.

>All the trappings are there; reverence of European history, contempt for modern media, and the elephant in the room pepe.
Despite what you may think, I don't have contempt for modern media and I consume a lot of it. The opening post was never about me and I'm confused as to why you would think it is. The assertion that a character which is posted around 4chan is exclusively symbolic of a politically motivated interest is absurd, too. The only trappings present are your own narrow minded viewpoints of this site and society in general.

>The example you gave was a comparison between two works, with the intention of highlighting the stark contrast between classical European literature and modern Japanese animation.
This little gem right here proves you've missed the point completely. For the sake of the discussion, ignore the titles of the works. Here: What is the difference between some guy talking about a fictional character he liked in a book and some guy talking about a fictional character he liked in an anime? I can't believe I had to water this down.

It kind of depends on the individuals being compared, but there are a few general differences between these which may be used to better understand the difference in perception.

First off, the most obvious difference would be that anime is largely a visual medium, with much of its storytelling being done through what you see. Unless you put a large amount of pictures in a book, you will simply be unable to achieve the same effect within that medium. Instead, books usually must be understood entirely from the words on the page. Normal people generally find reading to not be particularly enjoyable, so they don't tend to passively consume it. Thus, they don't really read enough to build up an idea in their head of what most fiction is like, or something along those lines. Anime is somewhat different, in that a normal person can end up seeing what it looks like without making too much effort to do so, and thus can build up that mental image of what they think most anime is like.

As an addition to this, even if one imagines what the characters in a book might look like, they usually won't look quite like what other readers think of, and there's not necessarily a distinct "style" one would imagine those characters in. Anime, on the other hand, is enjoyed at least partially because of the consistency of how characters look across the medium, and the particular style probably looks quite different than anything one might imagine on their own from a fictional book (at least, without intentionally changing how you imagine it). Thus, if the style is demonized based on some shows, then that demonization will apply to most shows. That same issue is a lot less likely with books, given that you can't necessarily reliably tell whether a book is fiction or non-fiction without a little bit of reading.

There are most definitely other differences, but this one likely plays the biggest role in the perception of those differences.

Also, it may be relevant to you that this is the opinion of someone who spends more time watching anime than reading fiction books, but who tends towards reading manga and visual novels more so than either of the original mediums asked about.
