Have you ever noticed how the quality of any thread immediately skyrockets after it reaches the bump limit and drops a few pages down? I have a theory that it's because most people still use the paged view and have a habit of picking a thread from their front page, making a bad post and leaving the thread. Only those who have real interest in the subject keep posting in the thread after it's hidden from plain sight and the post rate drops. This is especially true on any of the bigger boards.
Has anyone else seen this? Could we make use of this to create more high quality discussion?

catalog is a worse offender when it comes to picking threads from the top of it. it also disables you too jump right into a conversation since threads are judged by the OP which basically kills everything that makes image and textboards interesting, that the last parts of conversation are always seen at the top instead of what an idiotic OP has written.

Phoneposters are more likely to use the catalog, that's how I browse when I'm in bed. Paged view is much better when browsing for non autosaging threads on PC, I use the catalog to find autosaging threads on PC or a thread I want to bump specifically, otherwise I sage every post I make.

1. More than half of it is taken up by empty space and pictures that are more often than not completely off-topic
2. If the opening post is long, it hides a part of it
3. You see zero replies so you have no idea is the thread even still on topic or has it derailed into a mess
I could see the point of it if people used the subject field more.

i have my own ideas of why that would be, maybe because it hits bump limit, at that point, you think "oh, thread's dead, might as well leave" and therefore any posts after that point are, in a way, meaningless since everyone's abandoning thread, except for a few, who want to continue discussion till the end, also, the thought of being in a situation of "this is the end, and this may be the last time i'll be able to say it here" really evokes an emotional response from users who care enough about the thread, it brings users closer together

It was once tradition to sage threads with good active conversations in them. With boards being as fast as they are these days it's not very useful.
