Do you choose something that ''just werks''

When first evaluating things I'm more likely to go with something that "just werks" but I may eventually switch to the other if there's something I can't make the "just werks" thing do.

i choose something that doesn't work well that i can improve, on the grounds that it makes me feel like hot shit for not choosing the easy option, but i never actually get it to work well

I've had the same Gentoo install on my computer for 5 years.

It's still completely up to date, moreso than most distros.

It gets better over time, not worse over time, like Windows.
