When comparing the self to others improper cognitive behavior will either make us overestimate our abilities or underestimate our abilities.
The desirable traits of the self get underestimated whenever someone expresses doubt or feels like a task is impossible leading to an inevitable defeat regardless.
This is obviously self handicapping in order to mentally protect ourselves from failure, but ultimately means they will be stuck doing unfulfilling jobs most of their life.
The opposite is the Dunning–Kruger effect where a low ability person believes themselves to be greater than they are.
The offending person creates an illusion in their head of what a master of something looks like and they assume the role before having the adequate training to perform at that level.
As a result they often neglect any attempts at learning things as a beginner.
Both have no self awareness leading to them under-performing either from the get-go or later in life.
