Should I symlink images in my 4chan folders to make them show up in multiple places when needed?
Are there any downsides or potentials for confusion?

I don't know what that means.

Like shortcut files except more low level so even software follows the link and treats your symlink as if its the actual file.
E.g. symlink an image that's in a different directory and your file browser will treat the link like the actual image so you can effectively have that 1 image in multiple places without having to actually copy the image.

Probably not, especially if some are probably illegal somewhere.

I don't understand what the advantage of symlinking the files would be. Just to access them in multiple places?

tagging images directly is better

Yup, that's it.

There's always been 2 major organizational schemes that I use:
1) Organize images by their content (e.g. image of an anime character goes into my "a" folder inside the subdirectory of the anime its from)
2) Organize images by how I might use them on 4chan (e.g. a "macros" folder)

It's easy to decide if I don't know what the content is from or if it's fairly generic, but sometimes there is a conflict though. What if an anime character has a really great reaction image and I know I'll never see it again if I just bury it in the anime folder its from (unless I'm in a thread about that anime or something)
In such a case I might consider making a symlink so it can appear in both the right anime folder and also in a generic reaction image folder or something, where it's more likely to be seen.

Oh, that's kind of cool.

Did it work?

There's no question about whether it will work or not. It will.
The question is whether it's effective and worth the effort or not.

Wouldn't it be easier to just create a database and attach keywords to every image? That is if your goal is to find pictures more easily. If you aim to have a simply better visualization then your method is more functional.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
