I'm curious if anyone knows if the number of bans mods hand out has increased over the years. Is there a site anywhere which would have such information?

Probably not as the bans page only provides a sampling.

Do you think mods and managers keep track of that themselves? I've never seen anyone ever talk about it.

There's logs of at least recent bans and deleted posts kept for each jan/mod, but not much else is known.
you have to account for the increased traffic to the site over the years also

There's no way for regular users like us to know, unfortunately. I think they only keep recent records, like the internal board archives.
Anyway, one thing I've noticed from visiting the ban page is that bans are much more templated (RapeApe did mention something about this during the whole Anonymous-san incident) and lenient: apart from ban evasion (30 days) and raids (5 days), I've never seen a single ban longer than 3 days.

Great point. I suppose that would also stress the mods level of tolerance as well.

I'm pretty sure numbers are kept.
At least a few times when moot did a talk they bragged about how many bans and showed the page once.

Also, moot has replied to people asking how many bans they have had in the past.
I think retention is pretty long if not forever.
I don't remember if they showed stats again after this or not.
