>>90261737

>As conventional fuels were in extremely short supply by late 1944, Lippisch proposed that the P.13a be powered by coal. Initially, it was proposed that a wire-mesh basket holding coal be mounted behind a nose air intake, protruding slightly into the airflow and ignited by a gas burner. Following wind-tunnel testing of the ramjet and the coal basket, modifications were incorporated to provide more efficient combustion.

>The coal was to take the form of small granules instead of irregular lumps, to produce a controlled and even burn, and the basket was altered to a mesh drum revolving on a vertical axis at 60 rpm.

It never made it past wind-tunnel models but those crafty Germans would have probably pulled it off.

Little stories about this particular plane, squadron insignia and trolling assburger staff officers.

Why the bison as it's not native to Finland?

>During WW2 Finland got some new bombers from Germany.
>Pilots were trained in Poland.
>No insignia.
>HQ naturally orders pilots come up with one.
>Since coming up with something original requires too much effort.
>Take Polish vodka bottle.
>Remove label.
>Cutoff text from label.
>Glue it on paper.
>Send it HQ.
>Approved.

Now something about unusual paintjob.

>One of guys responsible for it was my teacher in trade school.
>Getting permission for might be bit problematic.
>Keep it secret from anyone above captain.
>That is kinda hard, but manageable.
>Finding paints that aren't exactly in AF stock is next problem.
>Aviation industry isn't that big here, not too many schools for mechanics.
>Someone from AF know someone from Finnair.
>They do heavy maintenance DC-10's for DHL.
>Borrow some, fighter isn't that big that anyone would notice.
>Small fighter is easily hidden in normal margins of error when it comes how much paint goes to widebody airliner.
>Thx DHL.
>Liberate some silver paint from some random airline.
>Radome was by default painted with gloss black, that is in AF inventory.
>Manage to keep it hidden from higher ups until first flight after maintenance and paint job.
>Make sure it happens on time when airspace is clear of civil aircraft as base uses same runway as local airport.
>Fly air show solo demo practice run at very low altitude.
>Faces of CO and XO were apparently priceless.
>Some jimmies were more than a bit rustled that day.
>Due to rustled jimmies, yellow is one of first DK's to be retired despite being one with least flight hours and most heavily upgraded ones.
>Burned in firefighting training.

>You have to be joking.

Nope.

Never underestimate how capable of staff NCO's, rat school officers, technician officers and engineer officers are at gaming the system and skating.

Also something strange happens to people when they become staff officers. Now days they probably eliminate sense of humor with endless powerpoint presentations and shieet in staff officer course, in past they just used different, but as inhumane torture methods as powerpoint to achieve same result.

I was once in a briefing held by CO and XO. It was about what squadron does in next 6 months, on general level when this and that exercise happens and who pays for it. Week long night flying ex paid by military district HQ, CO and XO high fives. Live firing ex involving few live missiles paid by general HQ, high 5's like in previous case. Fighter squadron burns a lot of money in 6 months, but bosses hate to sign squadrons own money away. Week long live firing exercise for half of military police platoon paid by squadron? Disaster worth of 40 minutes rant from CO. Literally few spam cans of ammo and maybe some LAW's. They also ate MRE's despite being in army base as they would have had pay for fresh food from army dining facility form "their" budget.
>>
>>90265459
Then why is the F-22 considered USAF's first supermaneuverable combat jet? Answer adjustable nose and vectored thrust engines.

Also no wing weapon stations.

More predictable stall characteristics and better aileron control authority in case of stall, both leading to better control at high angles of attack. Maintaining control authority even after stall. Transonic speeds are where lot of dog fighting happens, inward airflow from wing also helps maintaining control in that case.

>And here i was thinking only hues did that kind of shit.
>Its the same everywhere.

All militaries have some things in common, but usually with local twist. Bureaucracy meets frustration and pranks at some point.

Also before anyone asks about what is rat school? Once upon time in 70's, some bureaucrat at ministry of defense found out something horrible, education level of MoD personnel is lower than in other ministries. That had to be fixed. Solution was simple. Give all non-technical NCO's bachelors degree, rename staff NCO school to defense college. Bachelors degree that was mostly about hazing and bureaucracy, rumors say it also included some pedagogy. They kept a nice tradition from old staff NCO school days, don't allow cadets to keep Sam Browne belts loop locked, so they had tails. Given that old service uniforms were grey. Cadets kinda looked like rats and that is where name comes from.

Between 70's and early 2000's pretty much every staff NCO in Finnish defense forces was some sort of technical specialist. Exception being few old school NCO's who refused to be promoted out of principle.

Are you pretending to be retarded?

Probably not. But the original point being, was that jets were denied proper development and here you are harping on about the 262 having poor characteristics, which happened BECAUSE it was underdeveloped.

Never mind the fact that German prop planes were still miles better than whatever rustbuckets the Allies flew around in, bahahaha.

>The 262's were complete garbage, germany didn't have access to enough materials required and as such the engines would be completely destroyed after only a few flights

That didn't really matter due to two things. Kerosene was less short of supply than aviation gasoline and they had ample supply of malnourished involuntary labor force to make engines in huge numbers out of crap materials that lacked alloy components needed to make 'em last.

The shit thing about Me-262 was the fact that it's introduction to service was delayed to retarded need to turn it into fast bomber. It came available in greater numbers at point where most of well trained Luftwaffe pilots had already died.
