You guys honestly didn't get it. American Sniper is a tragedy, not a propaganda piece.

The entire movie is about how Chris Kyle's conscious is tearing him apart because of the things he has to do at war. He keeps justifying it to himself that he's protecting Americans or he's doing his duty, but he knows killing is wrong and he can't get over that. Little by little, the more people he kills, the more it fucks him up.

Two scenes show this the best. The first is the character development between when Kyle kills his first kid and when he almost kills the second. The first one he kills the kid, doesn't feel great about it, but justifies it because he was defending America or whatever. The second time he almost shoots the kid with the RPG, he's basically begging the kid not to make him shoot him. He knows at this point its not about protecting America, its just him shooting some kid, and its fucked up and it'll just add to his internal struggle.

The second scene is at the end with Kyle and the shrink. The shrink questions whether Kyle feels what he did was right. Kyle answers that he did, but look how Bradley Cooper is acting out the scene. He's clearly lying. He's just feeding the lie back to himself so he doesn't go crazy from guilt.

This is a profoundly anti-war movie /pol./ Profoundly. It's never this straight forward with Clint Eastwood.
