When they started not giving a shit anymore and just playing to the lowest common denominator they didn't didn't quite yet have the competition from the internet, they could shit out absolutely uninspired garbage, treating it like the fashion industry or something. Now they've been doing that for so long they have no clue what even made people like movies in the first place.

I remember when I first started dating my gf she would always ask about going to the movies. I would ask her to list the available movies to me and she would find out that there wasn't anything worth watching. There is a market that goes to the movies just to go to the movies and that would be middle school aged kids. They don't care what is showing, they want to be without adult supervision. Catering to this market has gotten Hollywood where it is today.

Going to the movies is hugely expensive and the movies largely weren't worth seeing. Guardians Vol 2 and Spiderman were okay, but let's look at some of the others
