I grew up in Sandpoint ID and the farmers in WA and in Rathdrum ID would wait until the wind would take the smoke North whenever possible. The smoke would roll in so thick sometimes it was like the end of the world.

We moved to Coeur d'Alene and our first year the wind died on the very first day of field burning. The smoke dropped right onto CDA. It was 10x as bad as being in Sandpoint. That was one of the last years they burned the fields. After the bigger and wealthier Coeur d'Alene got hammered they put a stop to it.

Isn't Spokane in the mountains? Mountains always have harsh winters. I live in the Willamette Valley. Our seasons are mild. Rarely see much snow in the winter, generally less than 2 weeks of freezing temps in a year, and temps over 100 degrees in the valley are also pretty rare, even hitting the high 90s is generally only seen a few times in August, the hottest month of the year here.
