So they are officially recognized, the Rohingya however are seen as recent arrivals from Bangladesh. I differ from this poster in my opinion that there maybe some truth to the fact that 'Rohingya ' really did exist in Arakan a long time ago, but the influx of immigrants during ww2 up to the present makes an accurate assessment of the situation somewhat impossible.

I think the issue is this, and it's a struggle for the ownership of land here. I know for a fact teh value of land in Burma is skyrocketing due to the development taking place here.

Pushing out the Rohingya, you'll get settlers elswhere and crony companies moving in. Keep in mind the land in arakan is fertile relatively sparse and unpopulated. Then you compare that to neighboring Bangladesh that is overpopulated, with not very many resources avaialble and so inevitably whether teh Rohingya as an ethnic group are 'native' to the land or not. Unchecked immigation from bangladesh will ultimate result in an area that is predominantly occupied by Sunni muslims that may not identify with being 'Burmese'.
