The advertisers only make money if people who click their ads actually buy their product. For example, if they make $1 per click on average, they pay google Y amount of money per click. If suddenly they're only make $0.20 per click because of all the fake clicks, their profits are reduced by 80%, which will likely result in a net loss as the margins aren't very large to begin with. They obviously aren't going to be very happy with google for this, and google is going to either lose their business, or have to refund their money.

If I was Google, I would actually invest in AdNauseam. Not publicly, of course. This is an excellent way to dominate the market even harder and stomp out the competition. There's also the fact that every time you "click" on an ad, you're telling google that you visted X website at Y time on Z device. This is precisely the sort of behaviour that you're trying to avoid, and you can't very well combat ad tracking while actively helping them track you. After reading that article, I've concluded that there are no benefits to using AdNauseum, and it ultimately does play into Google's hands. Time to switch back to plain old uBlock origin.
