the main thing that i was commenting on was that you said bots are responsible, since you are bringing up load balancing that is a fair point, linode has a load distribution add on that is $20 a month, going back to my comment i mentioned that they probably weren't expecting to get a lot of traffic, which means that they wouldn't feel compelled to pay the extra $20 a month. and the aws load balancer is .025 per hour of load balancing or .008 per gb sent through the load balancer. which means that them being the jews they are felt that it would be best to wait it out and see if they actually need it. And even if they didn't know much they would be able to see that a simple solution such as aws could potentially cost them more money than it is worth if someone did actually decide to target their servers for a long time, costing them more money depending on the size and duration of the attack.

since they haven't shown any signs of security knowledge i am betting that they realized that the site was down and went through logs to find that thousands of unique users tried to access their site in a short time, which to the uneducated owners would look like those spooky high tech ddos attacks that everyone always talks about.
