luckily for humans, there is this element called uranium, and this element just happens to have an isotope that will undergo a fission chain reaction under the proper conditions. this isotope is basically the only thing in nature found in decent quantities that can do this. if you manage to split all of these uranium atoms at the same time, enough energy is released to simulate the temperatures found in the core of the Sun for just a few billionths of a second, long enough for the lightest atoms (hydrogen) to undergo fusion.

the fission of the uranium/plutonium on its own releases an absolutely insane amount of energy, but when you add fusion into the mix you get insane yield multipliers. both of these massively complement one another. hydrogen bombs essentially have a limitless yield, the benefits of which would seem pretty obvious.
