The problem with reclaiming Constantinople after the 4th crusade was that the Nicaeans spent too much effort in their war to reclaim Constantinople and Greece from the Latins while neglecting their eastern borders, thus giving the chance for the Turks to keep expanding until they reach the Aegean and the Bosphorus, even after they've been weakened by the Mongols.
