Good thing I have a lot of savings because I turned down an offer from one of these dumps already. I thought these stereotypical "techie workplaces" were just a meme. Why has tech become so culturally marxist? Does the traditional conservative tech company still exist? I just want to go back to my comfy Dilbert existence.

What kind of company do you work at? Do you guys sell software or did you do stuff like getting contracted by industries? Database work etc

I'm trying to start a software company (utility apps for phone & desktop, simple games) I'm wondering how hard it is to break into the business. Might be easier to just get contracted and do braindead Java GUI work for some pharmaceutical company or someone with money.
>>
>>139673855
start your own company. I did and I've never looked back because the competition are the idiots you just described and they're incredibly easy to underbid and outperform. I've got me and 5 guys I knew from college in a regular house as an office doing as much work as the trendy liberal idiots a couple blocks over do with a staff of 15 in an office that's 10 times as expensive. I've given everybody 2 raises so far this year and it's all out of profit no VC money whatsoever.

The company developed trading software, we got acquired by a competitor who wanted the tech but not the talent. I didn't start it and never had a stake so I can't provide any useful advice for startups, sadly.

Goldman Sachs changed their dress code for programmers to attract more talent. Programmers have the best paying jobs for the least amount of work. The outsourcing meme has been around forever, but its never been true. If programmers aren't important how did we get fucking goldman sachs to bend to our will.
>>
>>139673855
There are gazillions of smaller tech companies that employ traditional autists who only care about their area of expertise. Startups are always hiring because they're startups. They hire pink haired hipsters because they want forty year old investors to think they're the next hip thing like Uber or Snapchat. Most of the places you interviewed at will be gone when the first round of capital runs out.

I'm a Gen X'er too but a little younger. I might be look for a new job out of choice (sort of bored of my work) though.

I hear the hiring side of these interviews, etc... and I shudder to think what it looks like if I come in.

One thing I'm concerned about is that millennial software people expect your online presence to have github projects, stackoverflow activity, etc... I fuck around with all that shit at work so why the fuck would I want to do it for fun?

BTW, if you're looking for work, apply for work with defense contractors. They usually don't tolerate the playpen office bullshit. You don't need a security clearance for most positions and some will put you in for a clearance while on the job.

I agree. It's because millennials don't want to work. They want to hang out in their parents basement, so the office has turned into their parents basement.

I also hate that shit. I'd much rather just have a raise then a stupid item in the office I won't have time to use. It's literally just advertising for clients to make their staff seem "cool" and "hip", in reality, the actual workers never use it.

Dude I have 12 years db experience. I'm a Senior BI Engineer, angling for an architect gig.

I went from $45k in 2009 to $108k currently. I burned through 5 employers in that time currently on my sixth, and entertaining an offer from Amazon for $160. (Have to move to Seattle tho so not sure)

Dude

Whyyyyy the FUCK didn't you quit every 2 years and get a giant raise with a new employer? Literally no one gives a fuck, it's fucking standard.

That's why you got cut. You look like you have no initiative and too much PTO accrued.

At my current job I work with a guy who's been there 17 years. We have the same title and I probably make 20% more than he does.

And yea I wear tennis shoes to work.

Outsourced "talent" sucks ass. Half my job is cleaning up their messes the other half is doing shit they couldn't figure out in the first place.

Outsourcing isn't dead. Yet. But it's dying. Too many people like me got paged in the middle of the night to fix their million dollar customer facing catastrophes and we were extremely candid in documenting what happened after the fact.

But hey don't take my word for it

I'm not super interested in job hopping every two years, just thinking about it gives me anxiety. It had nothing to do with my lay off. I got cut because we got acquired and pretty much everyone had outlived their usefulness to our new corporate overlords. I started at $75k and by the end I was at $110k. Sure it's not amazing pay by any means but money has never been the end all be all for me, I've never been a big spender so after all my debt was paid off I'd just toss my surplus after bills into savings and my 401k. I have no debt, I own my house and car outright, I think I've done alright so far.

The interview was .. weird.

I think I'm gonna decline. Or offer like $130 to telecommute maybe. I don't know yet. It was a shit interview I'm getting a bad vibe. I interviewed well just suspicious they're shitty to work for.

But dude I'd be building their entire supply chain fleet.

Here's the salary range for my career combined with education within this area, so scale up (or down) based upon your area. This is in Charlottesville VA where real estate is cheap too. Up in MD you could look at 140, 160, but it costs more up there. You'd have to do the math though.

Our company generally pays better than most.

Snowden was mostly of an embarrassment to the DoD but also to the contractor (BAH) hired investigate and weed out these people. We don't run investigations for the government, and our software goes through rigorous testing and is always controlled by soldiers. When they accept and use our software, it's entirely out of our hands what they do with it. We just respond to requests to fix bugs, feature requests, etc...

I've found this to be true. I don't know why fags make so many shitty video games and people keep buying them.

This is my greatest fear.

I just want to graduate and slip into some entry level 9-5 no fuss.

But all I'm hearing is all this "you've got to network" memery.

Why the fuck can't people understand that I didn't get into CS because I love people.

>Why the fuck can't people understand that I didn't get into CS because I love people.

Because the boomers that run America currently have no concept of a human being with value, unless that value is empty soulless posturing to make a good first impression.

Boomers do not hire based on job skill, they hire based on appearance and charisma.

So, naturally, any trade or field which requires LOTS of studying is going to suffer greatly in the United States because those with the mindset to actually understand the job don't spend all their time socializing to impress their boss.

Open-space offices are dogshit. They only work well for very-small companies (less than 10 people). Many recent studies have further proven that. They're too noisy, making it hard for people to concentrate and work. They encourage procrastination and messing around with the neighbors way too much. At the same time, they increase stress because if the manager (or a coworker) is misbehaving, it's extremely hard to subtly reach out to HR and it's not possible to talk in private. Moreover, they're a nightmare when privileged information is supposed to be handled.

I feel you anon, we got bought by an american company and the same shit happened.

And I just want to code cool shit, I don't want to work with wankers that don't do their fucking job

You always have the option on starting you own shit, though ofc it comes with risks. I run my own stuff now. We don't got this infestation so bad as you over here, but there are a lot of idiots here too. Places where you can't fucking smoke, because dats ebin and they start to nag you about you personal life which is a BIG nono here. We're a private people

I don't want to hire females and other races just because of "diversity" or whatever it is.
I might hire one or two if I know them personally though or if they are actually qualified though.

I'd like to know more about the laws regarding with business in this country.

I've thought of doing that.
I know a bit about security.
Is it possible for me just to ask companies to run some pentests while learning as I go?
I know basic stuff already. Surely just using the free security software available right now is good enough and I could do a better job than the pajeets in india running nessus and copy pasting the results.

I just want to have a business where I can start developing my own ideas I have myself. But I need to start somewhere

I wouldn't hire a white woman if she was a sjw or got bad vibes off of her.

No it couldn't because the basis of the meme was that the stuff the virgin was doing in Quentin's pictures was actually pretty fucking normal, and then someone made a Chad variation taking the Virgin stuff to the complete opposite to show how retarded portraying the Virgin stuff as abnormal was. It couldn't be a good one if you were portraying the Chad in a positive light because that's not the point of the original fucking images.

Then retards got a hold of it and missed the point completely. The meme peaked with the Virgin Island/Chad Republic, it's pretty much worthless now.
