Transportation as a punishment was a bit of a scam. It was more akin to manufacturing a supply of higher quality slave labor to build up the furthest reaches of the Empire. But a lot of wealth flowed into that state as a result, and the rest of the world started taking them seriously as a colony. About 100 years in the were fully established as a nation. Which is incredibly fast.

While there were some tensions with aboriginals and chinks and miner's unions it was mostly smooth sailing because most people were European and had a hardcore work ethic. And it's sunny most of the time, so less downtime during winter. It was productive year-round.
