I like the springfield saint, internals are Melanite coated for durability and trigger us nickel boron, shoots pretty well and have zero issues with it. It's on the lower end of the cost spectrum for entry level ARs too so you can spend more on buying rounds.

Whatever you go with just owning one isn't enough, you have to get out and practice, go to the range and become comfortable with your weapon. Breakdown the gun and know how to replace at least the major components that are likely to wear out. And for goodness sakes clean your rifle after a day of shooting! And of course check to see if it's .233 or 5.56 before putting any ammo in it.

I have shotgun for home defense, Hard to beat. The sound of a pump racking a round is enough to make most intruders think twice before coming up the stairs. Also no matter how much you practice at the range, your aim with a handgun might be off when shit hits the fan, not so much with a shotgun at close range. Because AR's can potentially blow goats in a pinch too unreliable for my blood I don't want my defense weapon jamming.

In close quarters defense you want a shotgun high caliber revolver or both.
Long range you want bolt action rifles.

AR's are great for collectors and plunking around, but personally I wouldn't bank my life on a jamming ass semi auto ever.

stuff you should buy, in order

1) 12ga pump action shotgun, with shoulder stock (not pistol grip), short barrel (18") home defense model. Either Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 series. You can do this for about $300.

2) 250rd of 12ga federal premium #1 buckshot

3)A 9mm concealed carry handgun. If it fits well in your hand, choose a Glock 19. Get 4 magazines for whatever handgun you buy

4) 9mm ammo: 250 rds of 124grn JHP ammunition, and 250 rds of 124grn FMJ ammunition.

5) any $600 AR-15 / M4gery carbine clone with the following features:
- A2 style F-marked front sight base
- M4 feed ramps
- 1:7 twist 16" barrel (14.5" bbl w/ pinned flashhider is also fine)
- M16 bolt carrier group
- 2point USGI sling (attached to FSB and rear of buttstock)
- rear iron sight of your choice, but must be made of actual metal and must match A2 F-marked FSB. The BCM carryhandle with A2 iron rear sight block is a great choice. Do not put plastic magpul sights on your rifle.

Do not build your first AR-15. You don't build them to save money; you build them because you are smart and experienced enough to build one exactly the way you want. The first AR you get should be as close to what uncle sam fields as possible. Always use a mil-spec part when available.

6) 7 PMAG 30s, any generation

7) 2000 rds of Lake City M855 62grn 5.56mm ammunition

Once you have these items, choose the right set of holsters for your handgun, to allow you to carry concealed with dress and casual clothes, in summer and winter.

what is your budget?

For your first rifle, buy a cheap stripped lower receiver and parts kit, get whatever grip and stock you want if possible so you save money not throwing away parts(like the grip and stock). You're gonna buy a complete upper receiver, though. This will save you from having to buy additional tools like a vise block or barrel nut wrenches. You can put the lower parts together with punches and a hammer or pliers and tape, there's tons of youtube vids on how to do it.

Then buy a nice complete upper from someone like BCM, Spikes Tactical, or if you can afford it Daniel Defense or Knight's Armament Company. For a home defense rifle, you will not notice the accuracy afforded by a free floated barrel, so there is no need to purchase one. I specifically mentioned BCM at the beginning because their complete uppers come without handguards but with an old school fixed front sight base with a pinned gas block. So all you've gotta do then is buy cheap drop-in handguards of your choice that will go in front of the delta ring, and a rear iron sight of your choice. You need at the minimum iron sights, a sling, and a flashlight for home defense. If you can spend more the next thing you should get is a red dot optic from Aimpoint because their battery life is amazing. Aimpoint PROs come with a mounting base which you turn until it clicks 3 times and it's then torqued properly to your picatinny rail on your upper receiver. You can leave it on setting 5 I think, and without turning it off it lasts like 3 years. To be extra safe you could change out the battery on your birthday and be 100% certain the dot will always be on, so that if needed you can grab your rifle and be ready to rock without pressing any buttons. The sling is to your rifle as a holster is to your pistol. The flashlight is to cover your ass in court. "Yes, I feared for my life and I did positively identify the dindu nuff--I mean intruder before I defended myself with my rifle."

You can build or a buy a legit copy of the M4 except for the full-auto fire control group, and you don't need to spend much money to do so.

With practice and training, you will have sufficient accuracy to hit any man-sized target out to 300 meters. With more practice, 600m.

Both of these figures are well beyond what is legally defensible in any conceivable scenario in the USA.

I can't even own a knife, or bat or literally any object for self defense in my country, let alone a gun. If I had gun licenses (there are multiple catagories) and have literally any minor infraction with the law, I will instantly lose the gun licenses even though it may have been something as small as a warning from a police officer at a traffic stop for being very slightly over the speed limit. Police have to do random spot checks on my home to see how the firearms are stored (they must be always locked in a safe at all times except for when in use for your specified reasoning for applying for the firearms licenses in the first place) if they are not stored to their liking, they will take your guns and your license to own them.
Also, it's illegal to have a bullet proof vest or a slash vest to protect from knives (Yes, things that are purely defensive are illegal under the grounds that a criminal could use a bullet proof vest against police, as for a slash vest I didn't realize the police stabbed anyone.) Mace and pepper spray is also illegal.
If someone breaks in with their own firearms or weaponry and attacks you, if you happened to be cleaning your firearms and shot towards them for a warning or directly at them to wound - you would be jailed and the attacker would most likely go free and they would use it as an excuse to put in place even stricter gun laws.

Haven't bought one yet. Got a couple of hand guns in the house. Looking at the Sig MCX as my next purchase.

The local gun store down the street has armalite AR-15s for 475. Milspec M4 with A2 front sight post and A4 carry handle / mil spec rail. Armalite is the original manufacturer of the AR (Armalite Model 15.) Very good quality chrome lined 1 in 7 milspec carbine. That would be my vote. If you need an inexpensive optic you can't go wrong with a Primary arms advanced Micro. It's a 200 dollar aimpoint micro t2 essentially. Price should no longer be a factor as you can get into a quality AR for well under 600 these days. My other vote would go to either a Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Sport II, Colt 6920, Windham Arms (same crew as the old bushmaster), Ruger SR556, or FN. I would steer clear of the new bushmaster, Remington, or DPMS. Not that they are terrible but premium rifles are so inexpensive now there's no reason to go with a budget brand.

Australia used to be a gun owning nation, people did own guns for home defense as well as a lot of people owning it for hunting and that sort of thing, open carry or concealed carry has never really been a thing here though although I would be fine with just home defense at this point...

Anyway, in 1996 the "Port Arthur Massacre" happened 35 people were killed and 23 wounded, virtually over night our CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT announced the gun buy back scheme in which everyone had to come hand in their guns that were now classed as illegal for most who didn't have the new licenses (such as semi automatics which was the main focus as it was the weapon used, as well as pump actions and whatever else people were willing to hand over themselves) then they destroyed them all. So our "right wing" government became anti-gun and our "left wing" party (since we are a 2 party system) also is anti-gun. The only ones who aren't are very minor parties who do have a say, but they can't control everything or make any decisions. (like Australian Libertarian Party(LDP) and the Shooters, Fishers and farmers party.

Then despite statistics not showing any dramatic change, but instead continuing on the exact same trend it was before the ban and no faster (which was trending downward at a continual rate for the 60 years beforehand or so) they try to use that as an excuse to say it worked and to bring in more regulations on other things revolving around weapons/self defense or anything like that.
