The purpose of life, from an evolutionary perspective is mainly just to procreate, defecate, and consume food. All this higher intelligence bullshit is just an elaborate adaption to help us meet these few simple needs. The capitalist system we've devised and the social heirarchies we've created are merely tools used to established who gets to eat, fuck, piss, and shit more comfortably. Don't forget your purpose in life and don't let your position in the system dictate your fate. "Fuck her right in the pussy!"
Envision an anarchists' society, where your social status is determined by factors such as how much food and protection you offer your tribe. Imagine being able to pursue mates, without the prospect of sexual harassment for 'stare-raping' or looking at a woman the wrong way. No more messy divorces and losing half of your shit, when you move on to the next Misses to spread your seed. No more concept of private property or people starving. If you see something appetizing, pluck it from the branch or hunt it down. No more uniformed, donut-gorging cops with arbitrary authorities invested in them telling you what to do, when to do it, and how to conduct yourself. Live and let live.

That sounds nice, but I don't think that the purpose of life is what you say: eating, shitting, and fucking. I find Nietzsche's arguments for "the Will to Power" not only convincing, but also, even though you may call it self-delusion, satisfying.
What you described was an animal merely surviving. Even animals, like dogs and cats and other pets who are afforded this luxury, will always accept more and more. But if they had unlimited resources and life-span and could grow to ridiculous heights and sizes, they most certainly would. They would grow until every square inch of the universe was encompassed by themselves.
Humans are very much similar, but the direction of our unlimited growth tends to be more in a mental/psychological realm. Deep down, we all want to be the best, not just some part of that mediocre rabble. Ask a man who works a cubicle at a job they hate, has an apartment, enough food to survive, maybe even a little entertainment here and there. They'll probably want to kill themselves.
People don't want to just survive, but thrive. Self-preservation is merely a result of the Will to Power asserting itself, not wanting to be conquered by another.
