Suitability of ideology doesn't necessarily have to correlate with academic achievement. I think a lot of it is actually choosing that which most seems acceptable and therefore stable.

I remember watching a very good interview (Amateur interview in the back pages of youtube) between two secularist Iraqi's and their experience with Isis as Isis took over the city that they lived in. A lot of it was about how it was but on part of the conversation that stood out was when they discussed how Dr's, Professors etc... Who were once opposed to ISIS were suddenly openly and proudly supporting them while it were commoners like them most opposed to ISIS.
