here's a math problem for you. What's 19,421 + 74,262?

If you're like most people who start to do this problem you began in the single digits column. You added 2 and 1 to get 3. Then moved on. 6 and 2 is 8. 2 and 4 is 6. 4 and 9 is 13, so you mark down a 3 and carry the 1. 7 and 1 is 8 + 1 is 9 because you're carrying the 1. 93,683. Done. Simple.

This long addition is simple to learn, use, and develops into more complicated math (long division/multiplication as the most obvious.)

Now let's look at the common core problem. 26 + 17. 7 + 6 is 13, mark 3 carry the 1. 2 + 1 is 3 add the 1 we carried for 4. Gives 43. This is the normal way to solve the problem that you were all taught. You were taught this explicitly because it segues into longer addition.

On the other hand, the common core version is stupid bullshit. Subtracting 4 from 17 so you can add it to 26 to get 30, then adding the remaining 13 to get 43. Fine, it solves the problem. Maybe if you practice it your whole life you can get fast at it to the same degree. But how do you solve the problem I posed at the start of this post? What do you subtract from 74262 to make it easier to add to 19421? Do you match up to the 20000? Should you try to subtract 579 from 74262 so you can then add the remainder to 20000? Isn't that far more fucking complicated? Absolutely. Which is why it's retarded to ever attempt it.

So common core math stops working past even the triple digits. Whereas the normal natural method of long addition remains solid no matter how large the numbers get. Teaching students this common core style math puts them behind when they get to a higher grade level, compared to students who learned math the old way.

I personally do 26 + 17 by just moving 3 over from the 26 and at that point the problem basically already solved itself and is quick to do. Doing it the proper way feels slower for easy numbers like these.

Kind of a bad example because 421 + 262 never has any carry over so you wouldn't need to use the subtraction trick instead of normal carrying.
That said a quick way of doing the addition for this problem could be:

19,421 + 74,262
19,000 + 74,683 (adding the hundreds, tens, and ones digits together first)
20,000 + 73,683 (subtraction 1000 from the second number and adding it to the first)
93,683

Whether this actually works better as a way of teaching I can't say.
