You are arguing as a pro-axis enthusiast tho so I note that DeGaule managed to do more for France in his time than Petain, despite his failiures. Getting an occupational zone in Germany with barely any fighting done by his forces for one, getting nukes is number teo, having a foreign policy to a degree independent from the US is three.
Petain and DeGaulle were actually very similar but ideologically and politically strongarmed by more powerful "allies". Petain secured French interests in case of an Axis victory, DeGaulle in case of an Allied one. Allies won, mostly on the Eastern Front, so whatever the French leaders were doing was irrelevant. Both tried to conserve french lives and infrastructure to the degree possible and wanted to cut the best deal for France knowing that whoever wins the war will want France to be a puppet and will have the power to back it up. Petain did his job while the Germans had the upper hand and De Gaulle took over when the Americans conquered Western Europe and Soviets were thinking about invading.
