I think you misunderstand you dumbass. OP is implying that in the decline of the Roman empire a universalist morality that sought to combine all moralities into one became popular. Ultimately it was feckless in regards to stopping the fall of Rome.

Liberalism is the new universalist morality that seeks to embrace all others. It wants to absorb and displace all "lesser" moralities. After all, a person doesn't get sent to HR and then get fired, doesn't end up in prison in places like Germany, for committing a Christian sin like homosexuality or doing something non-Kosher for an Orthodox Jew or anything like that.

No, it's violation of the universalist liberal morality that claims to apply to everyone, like being racist or denying the holocaust, that's what gets you into trouble.

So the suggestion is that such a universalist morality is another symptom of decay.

In America we were a classical liberal country that had separation of church and state. Thousands of religious and philosophic cults sprung up everywhere. They ranged from the puritanical to the hedonistic. But none of them were allowed to be fused with government so that everyone had to be forced to abide by their moral dictates. That is the classical liberal conception of freedom.

In classical Rome they absorbed people of many faiths and there were many Gods. The Romans had a Roman religious tradition which was continually changing, inspired particularly by the Greeks whom they ad absorbed. But there was a respect for a duplicity of Gods in Rome.

Then Judeo-Christianity comes along and claims to supercede all other Gods/moralities. For their God has "no other God before me."

Similarly, liberalism has fused itself with American government. So where before it was considered unconstitutional to have the government do the bidding of some particular religion, liberalism passes itself off as the morality above all other moralities.

Hence liberalism uses government to dictate who you can hire and fire, with none of what they consider "discrimination!"

The dictate what you can say in the workplace. ie- Did you just call that guy a 'nigger?' Sorry we have to fire you, we could get sued."

-Which is to say, calling someone a nigger is a legally actionable offense. The universalist liberal morality has been placed above all others, even the morality that is freedom itself. We have given it the force of law.
