The only moral knowledge we can have through a rational will is necessarily both universal and rational.

As I said in my original post, this completely ignores the role of human nature in morality. Any society built on this premise of universal rational morality is utterly crippled in its ability to adapt to new moral situations because it can only accept outcomes that the moral calculus shows is consistent with the existing rational principles.

You seem to appear to believe morality is both universal and rational. That is very mistaken and any society built upon such a premise would be arrogant and mired in rigid thinking. Kant's greatest contribution to ethics is his demonstration that morality DOES NOT reduce to anything universal and rational. The failure of his great efforts to produce any fruit is this demonstration.

To human nature. Morality arises from our human qualities to facilitate our societies and our existence.

Other beings are of different natures. More importantly, with sufficient technology we will one day be able to change our own natures. We should be aware that this comes with changing fundamental assumptions about morality before we delve too deeply into AI or transhumanism.


Anyway, the categorical imperative is a GOOD ATTEMPT at reducing morality to logical consistency but it fails. The categorical imperative requires all actions to be universalizable which sounds nice when you're talking about murder but it disallows for specialization. A society in which everyone must act as if their actions could be universalized leaves no room for differentiation and specialization of roles. But society actually works better when some people are leaders and others are followers and some are rational and others are irrational and some sow disorder and others impose order etc.

I don't disagree with you here, but you slipped from moral philosophy into political philosophy; What's right and universal into what works and particular.

Because we are historical creatures, bound in time and by the assumptions of our age (none of which are utterly consistent), we must reason from these principles, supporting the right and destroying the wrong.

The stratification of society is governed by these assumptions. Moral law is the means by which we make judgments and progress rationally through history's dialectic. As each age is a reaction and a recombination to the last, it is our moral will that draws this synthesis.

Again, moral will is not an abstract set of principles, it's the ability to reason and impose law onto ourselves.
