I landed my first job with a small business working on Microsoft stacks, ASP.NET MVC. New nothing about c# or ASP, could barley code. Was tough, but I put the time in.

Was in over my head, working with oil and gas clients. Boardrooms of oil execs, giving presentations that I knew nothing about. Looking back it was pretty mental.

The company was so small in the early days, I really got to learn the business inside and out.

My employer did say he would never hire anyone WITH a degree again. This didn't remain true, obviously, but that meant a lot to me at the time. It gave me the motivation and drive to continue.

Honestly your best bet is to find someone that will invest time into training you if you come along for the ride. Contact some companies close by and go talk to them. Funding yourself in the initial stages is hard.

self-taught or not doesn't matter in the end what matters is that you can do the job you are given and at the very least not be a burden to others

the difference here is what requirement and how high you set the bar for yourself, if you just want a job and be able to make some money sure, you can learn coding and get by just fine

Asking for brutally honest code reviews is good for your development, if you get told you're terrible a couple of times you start to take it on board and double check yourself before making the same mistakes.

lurking in daily programming threads is good to see what other people are up to, if you're a hobby programmer or it's your 9-5 you still need to freshen it up every now and again. Lurk and get some ideas.

Limiting yourself to a single paradigm is taking a narrow view of the field, even if you rarely use anything but OOP. Different languages and different ways of writing code are good for finding alternative ways of dealing with problems. I'd rather have 3 or 4 different ways to approach a problem than rolling out the same tired routine.

You implement something, you go away and look up some background or some technical docs/standards etc. I'm not saying spend all your time reading, you'd never get anything done. Knowing when and where to find information is a useful skill.


Aside of a ton of personal projects, built over a couple of hours of a couple of months in my spare time I've been involved in a number of projects designing and writing software for scientific intstruments, shit for labs etc. I also spent some time working on the firmware for some of those products, hence my comments about looking into different ways of getting things done.

I've got a couple of apps on the playstore as well, so I have some experience with carrying projects through from conception to commercial release.

I enjoy writing black box style systems though, the sort of thing a business might use internally to simplify their workflow or processes etc.

Several where I go

Literally some data structures, OOP, fancy algorithms, OS (just learning the fucking terminal would be enough), maybe a little bit of DB @ courses. Complexity theory which is a tad obsolete because hardware speeds up linear operations so sometimes linearity is to be preferred to O(log n) and all that shit.

And it lacks:
> Front-end/GUI dev, just learning a framework
> Setting up a server + a DB, some other framework
> Connecting a client and a server
> Actual practical software architecture rather than all those fucking "agile" methods + memorizing words for coding patterns
> SSL + setting up a payment terminal
> Apps

What they do is split it up into all these courses and you never get to connect it all together so you have to do a project on your own if you want to do that, which is literally training you to be a drone working only on one thing.

ofc you need to create your own projects, maintain a github, that's standard and everybody i know from my uni does that, but if you want to understand what you are doing, you also need to know the theory behind it - and the only way to prove that you understand it, is by passing examinations (or you can just walk to googgle HQ take the interview and ace it if you are that confident)
