He seems to be very establishment-ish though so if he runs next election he'll probably not even try because the two parties agree to swing the pendulum from time to time.

Never. He'd never win the GOP nomination from Trump, or probably against anyone else. While he does have a compelling story for all the reasons OP listed, he spent his entire life as a Democrat.
