We don't even need "defense". No one attacks us. We dominate the world. China may be able to take us, but China doesn't run planes into the world trade center like a bullied kid bringing a gun to school - only moron religious dickheads do that shit. China realizes that world economic upheaval would hurt them more than help them. America is their biggest consumer. We're "at war" with "terror", but there's nothing for us to be truly terrified about. The few religious fanatics that want us all dead only exist at all because they hide like cowards. I think we could cut defense by 30-40%, cut funding for aid entirely for all of those places on earth that perpetuate religious fanaticism and we'd have all the money we'd need for universal healthcare and free education for OUR citizens. I also think that our soldiers should be more like the roman army; roman military built aqueducts and roads and other infrastructure while they were "defending" the cities. Someone hasn't been lurking very long or hasn't been watching the news happenings in Europe very much. The West is already being invaded. The only reason it isn't a full fledged invasion with tanks and jets is because of America's defense spending. The real world is a giant 3d chess game with RPG, FPS and RTS elements added in all over the place. Additionally it's a team sport with more than 2 sides. Except it's the law of this land, and while it can be amended, you have rules by which you have to follow to get that done. The other guy is right, defense is one of the very few mandates in the Constitution. You might think that a mere experiment, but it is as good as holy doctrine.

Besides, a mere 15% of the defense budget would not come anywhere near close to paying for universal healthcare.

you've got a good point, if defense spending were truly defensive, we wouldn't need a very large military,but there's the rub, it's not purely for defense. They'll probably make some sort of single payer insurance system sooner or later, paid for by taxes or inflation or both, but the US military industrial complex will never significantly be cut back. Trump has been complaining that NATO needs to pay more of it's fair share, and other nations like Saudi Arabia have purchased hundreds of billions of dollars in weapons from the united states, weapons which we could destroy, if it pleases us...The point is it aint gunna happen that way homie, the US is prosperous because of the military industrial complex, not in spite of it.
