Well, women have two X's, which is probably why women are closer to the mean-- diploidy (the way we have two copies of every single gene) is a huge benefit to the species, because it allows mutations that may kill us or contribute to genetic load to be overridden by another copy of that same gene.

Men are basically haploid on the X-chromosome. This means that they'll have more recessive traits being expressed. This is why so many genetic disorders are much more common in males-- colorblindness, for example, needs two copies to be expressed in women. Men only need one.

It also explains a lot of the differences between men and women-- men are basically the genetic testing ground, where traits are expressed to their maximum extent. Evolution, favoring speedy adaptation, favors a high-risk high-reward reproductive strategy for men, the opposite for women.

Birds are the opposite: males are the diploid sex, females are haploid. It seems like you see a lot less sexual dimorphism in them, and more cooperative mating strategies. This is because the sex with the built-in mechanism to be more easily genetically differentiated isn't expendable.

The y-chromosome itself doesn't have many genes. Since it is always passed in its entirety from father to son, it can't really use many of the genetic mechanisms to compensate for mutations that other genes can within the gene pool. It's probably bad for a population to have too much vital stuff there, and that's probably why it shrunk so much.
