Because Europe isn't as free as America. In Austria, you can buy any bolt-action-rifle or breach-loading gun with any calibre whatsoever if you are 18 and older.

But for semi-autos as the AR-15 or a Steyr AUG and handguns you are required to have a "reason", and that reason is typically being a hunter or a member of a gun club.

Yeah, except that's not the case, because you already need a hunting or shooting license here to own pretty much any weapon, and that's the same in most EU countries. Politicians wouldn't have bothered voting a new gun ban if gun owners weren't going to be affected by it, now would they? All semi-auto rifles and any weapon that looks like an automatic weapon of war are going to be put in category A : military weaponry banned for civilians by defaut. However they've let in a possiblity of exception, to try to contain the huge ressentment of gun owners against them : it's up to each individual state to decide if they want to allow licensed shooters to own category A firearms, but only if they are members of a militia or actively training for and participating in shooting competitions, and can prove it.
So that's already a whole lot more of bullshit added to it. Up until now we "only" needed 3 controlled shooting sessions a year.
Not that France is going to allow shooters to have category A firearms anyway, since French politicians (Caseneuve and Leroux, as well as a shitload of socialist, communist and green MEPs) initiated the whole thing right after the Bataclan shooting, and heavily pressured the comission and other member states into adopting this law.
Other things to expect : magazines limited to 10 rounds for rifles, and 20 for handguns, internet sales are going to be banned, category D firearms that could be bought without a license or registration up until now (such as antiques, black powder guns, etc) are going to be lumped into category C, meaning we'll need a license and to store them in a safe now in order to own them, they'll also need to be registered. Starter pistols and non-firing replicas are going into category C as well (we don't know yet if it's going to apply to airguns, airsoft and paintball markers, but it is likely)

My state is very poor, but virtually all white except for the cities and one of the most armed states in America. Violent crime is almost unheard of, once again except in the nigger infested areas. For the Netherlands it's kind of a moot point though, as legal gun owners typically store their gun in the legally proscribed manner, which is locked away with the ammo seperate. Ironically, almost all known cases and the standard caselaw on self defense situations with a firearm concern illegally owned firearms. The illegality of the firearm has no bearing on a claim to self defense btw, and neither does improper storage. The only thing the judge looks at is the proportionality of the force used in the relation to the (percieved) threat in question. Illegal ownership or storage is a seperate charge, and quite a light one.

Lmao, since you brought that up: As far as I know that is still the law in the Netherlands. Breaking out of prison in itself is not illegal to do, as long as you don't cause damage or injury, don't threaten anyone etc.. Because you DO in fact have a right, and natural desire, to be free. That will not be held against you in the Dutch legal system.. Might blow your chances of parole though, but no extra sentencing.

this. i would also like to keep it that way - criminals in europe (not counting our newfound "citizens" from Africa and the middle east) tend to be less prone to random murder than the ones in the United States. Have a burglar breaking into the home of an old lady? Well, if that lady stumbles upon them in Europe, chances are good that they will simply flee the scene - that sort of softness is the reason why not owning guns actually works here. But in the U.S? Probably dindus that would simply murder her and proceed to steal stuff'n'shiet as if the interruption never even happened.

That doesn't mean that the U.S. should abolish personal weapons, though - you already have so many of them around and are filled with so many criminals more than ready to use them, that gun control laws would simply make all the normal citizens defenseless (so please, liberals, stop comparing your country to Europe when you lobby for no-gun-laws - it's not the same situation here!).

I grew up in a rural communities where some guns were present, but always in the hands of hunters, farmers etc. I just have a few air rifles for fun shooting.. Also, you have to bear in mind that most people in this country live relatively care-free and unafraid of violent crime, so it's not an issue to most.
