There's many theories: a) The oldest one is sort of taking revenge on behalf of society and punish the offender. b) Would be to isolate the subject from society and prevent from doing more harm c) to set an example out of him so the rest of society doesn't follow his path d) to rehabilitate the subject and try to make him more suitable before releasing him again. The original point of prison was to reform criminals so they could repent and find God. Now it's just needlessly cruel, especially for such long sentences. Shoving a bunch of people into a tiny space where their mental faculties deteriorate and they start doing pathological behavior like homosexuality. Firing squads would be more ethical.

Imprisonment is intended to be an "institutionalized reformation" of criminals.

You are sent to an institution, which is an isolated containment area in which a rigid set of daily rules and regulations are placed upon you wherein you hold little to no influence.
This obviously only works for those who genuinely want reformation and to repent for themselves, but most sent there are COMPLETELY socially undesirable.
- they're lazy
- they're stupid
- they're immoral
- they're disorderly/dysfunctionally mental
- they're morally/behaviorally/spiritually/cognitively pathological
- they live with an unquestioning degenerate mentality/lifestyle that has led them down a course of unlawful collision with severe consequences-- typically knowingly but uncaring and unconcerned with themselves and others.
- they're sociopathic
- they're vindictive and have extreme temperaments
- they don't consider consequences, either from lack of intellect or via ignorance.
- they have a pathological lack of consideration for how their behavior impacts others and society as a whole

Plainly put, everyone in prison is a living breathing detriment to the easily torn "fabric of society" with most needing to be isolated and kept in containment because they won't reform or repent.
