I'm inclined to agree with a couple of the other posters here and say that the animosity between the left and right is partly being fuelled by the need for dollars and clicks for the big news outlets; companies that are seeing record lows as young people get their news through new mediums. This combined with the internet's shortening of the gap between the center and the fringe and young people's sense that they have to be a part of a social movement have been a perfect recipe for the low-level unrest we see in America today. However, I don't expect any real revolution or civil war to occur, because the proportion of youth in western countries is too small to raise the tension sufficiently to fatally wound the system. If you look at revolutions across history, take the Arab Spring, for example, you'll see that it nearly always coincides with a big population wave hitting young adulthood. There's no wave coming in the West; in fact, it's receding. Every day that nothing happens, the chance of anything happens falls.
