A perfect example of this is SSX. I used to love the SSX series. From the first game to SSX Tricky to SSX 3, which was my personal favorite. I played the game for years with my brother. I bought the network adapter for the PS2 just to play online on that game.

i read an interview not to long ago where they said they have shelved the series for the foreseeable future. You can read between the lines there.

even CD Project Red have said they are very interested and open to making another game set in the Witcher universe and they practically nailed the coffin shut on a sequel even before the game came out. That's what happens when you make a successful game, you get options.

They only have one option, pour all of their top talent and resources into another mass effect game and risk it failing or just ignore the fuck out of it. I bought all the 3 games. The first one was great, a new experience to me since I rarely like sci-fi videogames. Second was slightly dissapointing in terms of cointinuity of the characters.
With the third game I alredy knew it was going to be bad, specially when seeing in the forums the Bioware staff doing surveys of what they would like the quarians to look like (which is a terrible move because it shows the lack of depth you've put into your lore). Still bought it and I gotta say I enjoyed it, even with the questionable ending.

But Andromeda... I just couldn't make it. I saw the conversations between characters, the terrible scenes... That'd be like buying meds, then keep accepting placebo after, then start buying car acid.

The writing was atrocious, scenes that were supposed to be epic were quickly squirrelled away so you could get back to your exciting kill and retrieve quests. The starting point rushed you through everything that should have set the pace and tone of the game and series. Instead you get this backstory rammed down your throat only to have it not matter at all since the "Exiles" have done everything the Pathfinder is supposed to have done. Your "First Contact" is not really first contact ever.

And lets not even begin with the cringefest called "dialogue choices", your crew passive aggressively hates you, your second in command secretly thinks you're shit, no build up of character through dialogue choices except for an afterword in your journal and clangers in the worst of times.

Its quite tragic considering they could have reset the whole game and series. I have to agree with the anon who said long ago, "the series ended with Mass Effect 2".
