If he was a terrible military leader he would not have gotten as far as he did. Practically the whole world was against him, he very nearly knocked out a world superpower, he steamrolled the french colonial empire and dozens of other nations that violently opposed him, and he didn't even intend to fight them all.
What you're saying is like saying Leonidas of Sparta was a bad military leader because he fought an unwinnable fight. Sometimes a fight has a greater purpose than victory, sometimes it's about fighting for what's true and righteous.
