Trump's actions in the last week have probably all but ensured that he will be judged harshly by history. There was nothing presidential about the way he behaved, and when our country needed someone to try and help heal the hurt so many were feeling, he only managed to stoke the flames of hatred not so much by what he said, rather by what he omitted saying.

But all of this is only made possible because a reasonably large number of my fellow citizens still appear to be in total agreement with most everything he decides to say. If anything, this recent and extremely shameful public episode only serves to highlight the amount of unconditional support he still gets from a segment of the population.

It seems pretty obvious to me that had someone like Obama acted anything close to the level of temper tantrums, lies and general deception we've seen from Trump so far, there would probably have been pitchforks outside the WH demanding his immediate ouster long ago. So much of the ingrained but silent prejudice in society has had a chance to manifest itself with these double standards. He gets a free pass...

Perhaps it's healthier in the long run to acknowledge that these differences do in fact exist, but I am very unsure that some of them can be bridged at all anymore. Trump has managed to polarize people in a toxic way I couldn't have imagined would even be possible.

Not really sure I fully understand the long-term implications of all of this, but I can't just sweep it under the rug as mere shenanigans. It feels like the government is being brought to a standstill because everyone's in 'damage control mode'.
