The only case I can think that would spark a civil war in the US would be a Presidential election where one side refuses to accept they lost and claims to be the legitimate government. At this point the country would split into different groups and start fighting over who is in charge.
The Democrats would probably win because the Police and Armed Forces upper officers are all mostly Democrat and the lower ranks would obey orders.

Anything of the sort really. If a Presidential candidate refuses to accept the results of an election then there would be violence. In the next election Trump losing but refusing to step down or the Democrats losing but refusing to accept the result as valid could spark it.
Due to the nature of the American system the electoral system is the only flash point which could cause a civil war because everyone is conditioned to wait until the next election and try to change things.
The other thing that could cause a civil war is if one side becomes permanent losers due to demographics or gerrymandering. At the moment the Democrats have more voters but their support is located into a few big cities, so most of the country outside of the cities is Republican. As more people move into cities this dynamic become pronounced. If it reaches a point where the popular vote far outweighs the representative vote then there will be a movement to remake the US into a direct democracy, where the only thing that matters is the popular vote. This would also be a flash point for civil war because denying it would legitimatise the democracy for the Democrats and granting it would make the Republicans permanent losers.
