I'm not one for the "weimarica" meme, but the parallels between the violent protester clashes of the 1920-30s between KPD/antifa/leftwing freikorps and the NSDAP/SA/rightwing freikorps is quite eerie. We're not quite in the middle of a recession, but we are right after one. And we're not reeling from a post-war reparation treaty, but we're struggling to keep up with costly and disastrous foreign policies and proxy wars.

Weimar collapsed because both the KPD and NSDAP captured the political conversation while the SPD and DNVP parties were hemorrhaging voters and influence due to corruption and failures to address national crisis. You know that in history it's usually the minority groups which lead the calls to topple governments and hardly ever the majority who tends to be complacent, right? The reason why Hindenburg dissolved the reichstag in1930 (and which led eventually to the 1932 election where Hitler defacto won) was over a dispute within the large mainstream coalition (SPD and the liberal conservatives came out - a bit like the Dems and GOP might be forced to do post-Trump) over fucking bank loan interest rates whether it should be lowered or increased by 1% while unemployment and inflation was at an all-time high.

Re domestic paramilitary organizations, those on the right are not particularly of note, imho. Their numbers are cyclical; the feds were super worried about them in the 90's with Waco / ruby ridge, etc. If the Nazi groups are gaining numbers now, it is not a stretch to see that from people blaming immigrant groups for their economic troubles as much as politicians. That is almost expected human behavior.

What I think is interesting and relevant is the rise in militancy on the left, and who or what is pushing that.
