The civil war was about States rights versus federal control and a variety of perceived economic reasons. One of those reasons happened to be slavery.

Not at all true. South America, the Caribbean, all filled with nations that relied just as much if not more so on slave labour than the south. All of them began industrialization measures around the start of the 20th century and did away with slavery. There is no reason to believe the south would not have also followed a similar path especially as many of their leaders, including Robert E Lee himself were morally opposed to the institution

I grew up in Virginia so I learned this ever year of school.

The ferederal government wanted to outlaw slavery. Southern states relied on slavery for their agricultural based economy. Southern states wanted their own power to choose if they had slaves or not, they didn't want to be told by the Federal government what to do.

So when people say it was a war over "state's rights" that's true: the right to keep slaves in that state.
