The political parties in the US basically act as mafias. I agree with you that they're destructive, but I think a party-free libertarian form of government would be much better. Imagine how many more people would focus on holding the government accountable as opposed to playing "hurrdurr the left this, the right that". Those barriers would still be there, but they wouldn't be openly endorsed by elected officials.
