You don't just become a "member" of the alt-right. There is not even a clear definition. It is not a party you can vote for with a clear program. Whether you "belong" to them or not is a subjective thing, as in, only you can decide that you consider yourself a part of the alt-right. The left love the broad definition of "alt-right", because it allows them to put that label on everyone who disagrees with them. They can then argue "If you hold these views, you are part of the alt-right, and because x and y are Neonazis, White Supremacists, etc. and also belong to the alt-right (according to us) you automatically endorse them." It is simply their new "Nazi" label they now use after they have realized calling regular people straight up Nazis had lost its effectiveness.
