>parents tell me growing up I have mostly Irish ancestry
>both my parent's have English surnames
How could this be? Were they lying to me?

The Irish, like a lot of other immigrants, anglicized their names. Sometimes they chose to do it, other times it was imposed on them against their will.

>both my parent's have English surnames
Oh yeah, what are the names ?

Likely. Get a DNA test, and ask your parents to get one for them as well.
I did, and it was amazing to see the bullshit which had been spread down. DNA doesn't lie. Dad told me this fucking fable about how our last name is German; turns out we've got ZERO German blood in us. We're Scottish / Irish. All of us, and my mother has a bit of Scandinavian in her. That's it.
Families tell bullshit stories.

My last name is Wright. Don't want to give the other but when I look it up on Google it says it comes from Anglo Saxon tribes that settled in England around the 5th century.

>Wright
Well that could easily be an Irish name, the internet tells me it's English, Scottish or northern Irish.
