When multi-generational homes were more prevalent you didn't see this kind of thing going on, but as America prospered it made sense to strike out on your own as soon as possible. More to the point, kicking their kids out at 18 was fine when small towns were still prevalent and jobs were plentiful.

It wasn't unusual to have entire generations in and around a single township, which still gave the extended family all the benefits of independent living but also the nearby support network should anything go wrong. If someone wasn't able to afford their home they could move in with family and share costs. If parents became dependent on other people in their old age they can easily still live separate from their children, as they will be nearby to check on them, or make the short move into one of their children's homes to continue living. It was a cultural contract that allowed for support to take place within the confines of each family, which allowed us to not be dependent on the state to care for us. Once the drive to move to large cities to find work opportunities the benefits of the family unit disappeared.

It's a big part of why you see no one respecting their elders, dropping them in care homes as soon as it becomes inconvenient, and weak marriages.
