Bannon is one of the leaders of the nationalist faction currently at war with the globalist faction of the government (McMaster, Kelly, McCain, Kushner, Ivanka and the like). McMaster, since getting installed by the Deep State after they ousted Flynn, has been slowly and steadily purging the NSC of his pro-Trump, America First types and replacing them with Obama types and others who support the jihadist states our neocon foreign policy hinges on. When Priebus got booted, he was replaced by McMaster buddy Gen. Kelly.

The nationalists are being slowly muscled out of the Trump administration and if Bannon, the leader of that faction, goes then the only high ranking one left is Miller. Trump does not have the political capital to fight back against the globalist Deep Staters on his own so if Bannon goes then the nationalist dream for the Trump administration essentially goes with him.
