I think for some people tradition in more important than innovation. Not everyone in small towns is an idiot, they are just emotionally attached to their past and the idea of change is uncomfortable to them. Maybe you can come to a compromise with your father. What part of Japan do you live in and how much are the taxes for the land? Could you rent the land to someone instead of selling it? That way you can keep your traditional land and maybe make some money from it, too.
