That's weird, because I'm a leftist, and I grew up in a rural county that was nearly ENTIRELY white, and all of the lefties I grew up with helped the rural poor all the time - mostly through the church, because that's how we did things. We'd even help the poor white folks with Confederate Flags on their lawns - even help the ones who talked about the Coming Race War.

The first time I really had to even deal with black people was in the military, and since most of them were fairly compassionate fellows who squared away their own shit first, and then helped their shipmates, we got along great.

It was the Bible-thumping "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" assholes I couldn't stand, because every motherfucking one of them was an ROTC scholarship grad or went to Annapolis because his daddy knew a fucking Senator. And every goddamn one, when he'd finally stagger into politics, had this fucked-up Republicanism drilled into him that was a mix of Manifest Destiny and Trickle-Down Voodoo Economics, with literally NO theoretical underpinnings. And they'd see my Bible and assume I was one of them, and Jesus you ought to have seen their eyes bug out when I told them I rather liked Bill Clinton, because he grew up poor and I knew what that felt like.
