No critique of the reasons White nationalist mobs shamble the streets — fulminating hatred, their snarling, sweaty faces lacquered in torchlit —would be honest nor will provide penetrating, useful insight into the dismal, dangerous situation without an examination of the deprivations, humiliations, angst, and feelings of powerlessness inflicted by capitalism. A sense of powerlessness is the key to mob action: One is gripped by a sense of purpose, power, and common destiny. The ruminating mind grows focussed on enemies, real and imagined. In the case of racist, reactionary mobs, the agency bestowing animus is, as a rule, misdirected at tangental targets.
True, the system has failed them at every turn — but it also has failed all but the financial and power elite, across the capitalist greedscape. The most profound nightmare of the elite’s is the powerless citizenry will stumble upon the fact and unite. Then there would arrive the phenomenon of a mob seized by a propitious purpose. The last thing the power elite — and that includes their Liberal class wing — desires is the rise of class consciousness driven, working class White people.
Hence, we witness the umbrage of liberals at the torch-bearing mob — but their failure to engage the situation with the tool of empathetic imagination. No, that does not mean condoning their racist, homophobic, nationalist, and all other ideologue-rancid obscenities spewed forth from the reactionary collective unconscious. Apprehending the cause does not bestow approval upon the effect. Rather, the insight gained can be useful in deploying an effective means to strike at the root of the pathos rather then complaining about the reek of its noxious blossoming.
Fascist uprisings, on an historical basis, reveal the failure of liberalism, that failure being, liberal’s embrace and enabling of the capitalist order i.e., the source of liberal privilege.
