In general we were much more sparsely populated back then. Crossing the border was excessively difficult 100 years ago. There were few places to stop for shade or get a drink of water. Yeah, you're right, they overlooked the border wall, but back then they didn't realize that the inhospitable desert that separated the civilized US from Mexico would become so easily traversable with the invention of motor vehicles and bleeding heart federal organizations and marxist human rights organizations that actively help the migrants into the country.
