I've read plenty of much older literature in which the term appears. The OED dates the documented use of "Romany" and "Romanies" in English to the early 19th century.

The big push to stop calling them "gypsies" definitely came in the '90s, at the same time as a lot of the other PC nonsense, but you don't need to fabricate history by implying that the new name was invented out of whole cloth at that time.

What you call gypsy music is actually present all over Balkan due to gypsies having a tradition playing music. Gypsies as slaves used to play music for the boyars/nobles. The current day "gypsy music" in Romania is not actually invented by gypsies, but it was brought by Greek Phanariotes that travelled to the Principalities and it was adopted by gypsy slaves to sing to the nobles. The same kind of music is present here in Greece, called skiladiko, in Serbia as turbofolk and Bulgaria as chalga, all over Balkan actually due to the Ottoman influence.

It just happens gypsies sing and play it mostly because gypsies have a long tradition of singing and playing instruments in the Balkan, that's why gypsy music appears to be influenced by local music but nowadays heavily influenced by turkish instruments etc to the ottoman conquest of the Balkan.

I spent this morning translating 'Seara' by Arghezi (is "casa prinsa de urcior" idiom? Saying lautareasca is gypsy music is like saying because there are many Romanians that play piano and play Chopin's music that makes Chopin's music Romanian.
